Gay sports have made great strides since the first Gay Games, thanks to recent social movements as well as prominent athletes who spoke out.
What about video games? 179 games have LGBT characters, most of which are female. Gay male protagonists, however, are more rare. When they do show up, their sexuality often becomes a plot element.

Dragons Dogma 2 does not disappoint. It is a role-playing game that allows you to make your own choices. The game will not ignore your choice if it is to make your party entirely male fantasy muscle men. Instead, it will mock you by saying that you are forming a harem. Others don’t see it as a joke.
Fair enough, the game does comment on women-only parties and hint that you are trying to create a harem. But it is not as obvious. Even so, it’s still a little too revealing for some players, especially considering the game is supposed to be playing on a more pseudo-medieval setting. This is a minor problem, and it’s less jarring that Mass Effect 3 making blatantly homosexual comments about Garrus.

Having a gay male character in Mass Effect was huge for the game and arguably made it more accessible to players. But it didn’t stop the homophobic backlash from erupting. Some players welcomed the new option while others thought it was a step in the wrong direction.
With the release of Legendary Edition, and the re-examination the trilogy’s storyline there is a chance for a shift in perception. Hopefully BioWare can take advantage of this.
Although a few of the earlier games in the series had hints that Jack wasn’t heterosexual, it was with Mass Effect 3 that we got an official gay romance option for male Shepard. Steve Cortez, a shuttle pilot who joins the team is an interesting option for Shepard’s love interest. However, he was only available in this game and was underwritten compared to the other options. In the end he didn’t stick around, but at least he gave you a chance to explore your sexuality. Interestingly, female Shepard already had two options – Jaal and Liara – though the latter was only ever available in the second game.

Video games are increasingly allowing players to customize their player character’s appearance, but they’re still far from creating virtual spaces where characters can reflect their own diversity. While some games have introduced LGBTQ romance options, many have left characters’ sexuality up to interpretation or even a headcanon.
For example, Kanji from Persona 4 develops a crush on a woman who is revealed to be a man, but without any in-game scenes that confirm his feelings he’s not considered queer. This is the same issue that arose with Bayonetta, who while being a fuck icon was never actually romantically involved with Jeanne.
Guerilla Games Horizon Zero Dawn broke this trend when it confirmed the sapphic character of its main protagonist in the Burning Shores (DLC) DLC. While the DLC suffered from the all-too-familiar review bombing that many LGBTQ movies, shows, and games experience, the scene of Aloy and Seyka admitting their feelings for each other was a moment for which fans had long been waiting. This is especially true since the game had previously left its main character’s sexuality up to player choice by letting them turn down romance arcs with women and men.

In the same way that The Sopranos upended mob dramas, HBO’s wildly popular adaptation of Naughty Dog’s 2013 hit The Last of Us changed the way video game adaptations approach storytelling. Although not everyone is happy with the choice of making Frank, Joel’s partner, dead in the third episode, the show was still a groundbreaking moment for gay gamer.
After a scary prologue where a scientist on an American talk show predicts the end of the world due to a fungal disease, the main characters in the game are introduced. Joel (Pedro Pascal), an experienced survivor is hired by the Fireflies rebel group to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year old girl.
As they escape Boston, the pair encounter a paranoid loner named Bill who takes refuge in an infested town protected by booby traps. Joel is bitter towards him, but he offers them a car to get on with their journey. Bill’s possession of homosexual pornography and the implication that he was romantically associated with Frank, who has since disappeared, confirm his homosexuality.

It’s not hard to see why this is a beloved game by queer gamers – it’s chock full of hot dudes and traumatized folk, which is basically gay catnip. Plus, the story is pretty good too – it has a lot of melodrama but still manages to be enjoyable.
But the game has its flaws. Some companions are problematic, like the surfer guy and the tranny with an evil alignment. Then there’s Hexxat, who can’t be romanced by any male protagonist. The biggest issue, though, is how much the game tries to cram in LGBT topics and other social issues. It’s like Bioware tried to please their audience too much and ended up damaging the game.
Mass Effect 3 allowed gay men to romance Alliance pilot Steve Cortez and Kaidan Alenko. The game was an improvement, but not as inclusive as they should have been. BioWare can do better with their next games.
