Hong Kong hosts the largest LGBTQ sporting and cultural event in the entire world. Participants have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the great organization of the games and meaningful experiences.
Despite the popular imagination that video games are the preserve of solitary nerds shooting 3D bad guys, there is actually a rich culture of independent developers dreaming up out-of-the-box interactive realities. Some are surprising queer-friendly.

VA-11 Hall-A, a cyberpunk bartending simulation, is set in a fictional dystopia called Glitch City. The player takes on the role of Jill, a twenty-something who is acerbic and reflects on her choices. She serves drinks and listens to the troubles of a colorful parade of patrons over 19 days in-game.
The bartending part is fairly simple. There’s a limited menu and a simple control scheme that uses taps. It’s interesting to see how this mechanic ties in with the story. Making different cocktails changes the direction of the game, so you have some choices that may not be obvious.
Sukeban Games, a Venezuelan developer, is well-known for its ability to blend mechanics with storytelling. The latest in this tradition is VA-11 hall-A. The studio’s team is largely from the country, which has been suffering under an economic crisis that has led to widespread famine and shortages of medicine.
It is set in 207X and, while it does deal with the usual Glitch City subjects, like corporate repression, fascist government control and corporate repression, it is more concerned with questions of labor and survival. It also features a very strong LGBQT representation and is less inclined to depict violence and other forms of oppression in its characters than some other similar games might be.

Night in the Woods has a lot of punch for a game without jump scares, resource scarcity or dreadful meta experiments. Night in the Woods is a 2017 indie hit that tells the tale of Mae Borowski. A 20-year-old college dropout, she returns to her dying home town of Possum Springs and tries to reconnect with childhood friends. There are some changes in Possum Springs. The coal industry has collapsed and many secrets have been buried.
Night in the Woods’ anthropomorphic characters embrace a youthful frivolity which might not appeal older players. The dialogue sometimes veers off into slang, and jokes which would not be appropriate in many other modern games. But the personalities of the crew make it easy to forgive. Mae’s pesky wit, her best friend Bea’s biting cynicism, and Angus’ gentle deadpan make them easy to connect with and understand.
The main storyline is a trojan horse of a coming-of age tale that surprises the player with themes such as faith, community and class struggle. The game takes you to some pretty wild places – existential terror, God’s nature, and the feeling that living isn’t worth it. But, most of the time, it focuses on building relationships between characters and offering moments of quiet friendship among a group of people trying to make sense of their lives.

The brainchild of the team behind GaymerX, 2064: Read Only Memories is a cyberpunk point and click adventure set in Neo-San Francisco. Inspired by Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father and Snatcher, it blends retrofuturism with a deep mature narrative and gameplay challenges in interactive pixel scenes that become more complex as you investigate. The game doesn’t shy away from its queer identity. It has several gay characters as well as a subplot about people who have turned into genetic hybrids. The game never attempts to make you feel uncomfortable or uses it as cheap humor. Instead, its quirkiness is natural and charming.
Turing is the sapient ROM, or Relationship Organisational Manager. The story revolves around a journalist who’s looking for a friend that has gone missing. Turing, a sapient ROM (or Relationship Organizational Manager) is more special than others in 2064 because he’s able to act and choose independently. As you put your journalisting skills to work, there are red herrings and twists and turns, and like any good mystery, a bigger threat then you might think at first.
This is a great example of an indie game that feels fully fleshed out in every way. The colourful world and narrative, as well as the gameplay and multiple endings, make this game worth your time. The 2017 update, 2064: INTEGRAL, brings a new font and voice acting. (Including an excellent performance by the robot himself), a script that is expanded and a playable chapter at the end.

A downtrodden occultist is hired to assist a Space X type project in preventing an asteroid slamming against the Earth. Soon he discovers that it is a massive artifact – maybe a temple, perhaps a prison – to a space deity from a conflict between dimensions which happened in Noachian times. It causes people to dismember family members and broadcasts psychic material. The book avoids being overly heavy-handed despite its bleak theme. The world-building is simpler than in works such as Doug Dandridge’s Empires at War, but depending on the reader’s taste this could be a positive. Annette is a powerful character who bridges The Nameless with George’s earlier work (many of these images feel like callbacks to Gog) and provides the book’s protagonist with agency. Annette also offers a moment’s respite for the reader and protagonist.
The Nameless has a great narrator who makes the story incredibly captivating. The story is a good one, even though some characters are underdeveloped.
