Luke Miller did not set out to create a gay-themed video game. He says his inspiration came from science fiction, point-and-click adventures and Australian gay culture. He also points to games like The Sims that allow players to have same-sex relationships, and the gender-bending Birdo from Super Mario Bros. 2.
Likewise, Dorian the mage in Dark Ages III is a complex character whose sexuality does not turn him into a trope. Overwatch’s gay NPCs and Borderlands’ playable characters are also notable examples.
Gay sex games
Gay characters and themes are still relatively rare, despite the growing popularity of videogames. Many options are available for those who want to play a game that has a distinctly gay twist. Developers in the likes of Melbourne, Australia and Eureka, Oregon are working to change that. Luke Miller, the creator of the sci-fi adventure My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant didn’t intend to create a “gay” game, but he did want all his characters homosexual.
The result is an incredibly campy game that’s full of sexual references and jokes. From a talking elevator that spouts sexy one-liners to a giant space bulldog named Boner, the game is unabashedly gay and more than a little bit silly.
This doesn’t mean that the game lacks heart. In fact, it can also be quite serious at times. As the story unfolds, the protagonist becomes more confident and starts to accept his own identity.
Since Nintendo’s censorship banjo-kazooie in 1988, where the cross-dressing Jolly Roger was asked to “stop her hat and hair pigtails,” the gaming industry has progressed. Today, the gamer has become king, and there are numerous ways that developers can include LGBT content in their games.
Gay games online
One of the joys of gaming is experiencing the life of a character very different from ourselves. That vicarious experience can be even more powerful in games that are explicitly LGBT-themed, a category that doesn’t get much love from the mainstream gaming world.
It’s a good thing that independent developers have their own titles to try and change the situation. Taking the form of visual novels or dating sims, these independent games focus on gay characters and themes in a way that is authentic and not forced. Coming Out on Top, for example, is one of these titles.
This game, as its name implies, lets players become a gay high school senior trying to reveal his sexuality to two of his friends. It’s not just a dating game, it’s also reminiscent of a classic ‘Choose Your Own Adventure.’ You’ll also be able, like in those old-school books, to select from a range of potential beauties and create relationships with a lot of emotional depth.
The game was kept from mainstream gaming because it had a lot homosexual content. Although some gamers say that Greenlight is used by homophobic, or at least ignorant, gamers to downvote material they find offensive.
Adult gay games
Animation has been used to tell diverse adult stories for a long time. From MLM space defenders to queer witches coming of age, and sapphic super-villains, it’s a platform that works well. It’s more common for games to feature LGBTQ characters and themes. Developers are embracing the genre in new ways.
Riot Games’ popular online role-playing games League of Legends and its mage Diana have recently introduced a gay relationship between Diana and Leona. Despite being in a fantasy world, the two women’s backstory is completely realistic. This addition to the existing story is a small but important step towards showing diversity and inclusion in gaming.
Celeste is another example of an excellently developed queer character. It’s a challenging but rewarding platform game which follows the journey up Mount Everest of a young transgender woman. Maddy Thorson – a woman who is transgender – designed, wrote and directed the game. It’s a great example of realism and authenticity.
As far as gameplay goes, the Life Is Strange series is a great place to look for LGBTQ representation. True Colors is the third game in which players can select a bisexual character and follow her romantic storylines. In other games, including the Mass Effect franchise, players can also pursue relationships between the same sexe. Some publishers have content restrictions that prevent these options from being available.
Gay adult games
Although there have long been gay themes in games – Bioware Dragon Age, with its same-sex options and The Sims man-onman couples – and there’s even a gender-bending Birdo in Super Mario 2, there aren’t that many pioneering homosexual titles. Most of the time, homosexuality is only a small side note that’s never acknowledged.
Fushigi Yougi was the first to break that mould. Originally a manga for girls by Yuu Watsuse, this girlish fantasy takes place in a magical version ancient China. It spans 18 volumes. It recognizes the competitive nature of young girls and pushes to help them find a better way of living. It also understood that friendship plays just as big a role in the success of your life as magic and fantasy do.
Fushigi Yuugi has been adapted into a television anime series, and three original video-animation (OVA) releases. The TV series ran from April 1995 to March 1996 on TV Tokyo and spawned two prequels in the form of the Genbu Saga manga and Fushigi Yuugi Eikoden OVA series.
A thirteen-volume light novel series followed the anime and was written by Megumi Nishizaki. The first 7 novels tell the story of Celestial Warriors Suzaku (and Seiryuu), while the remaining 6 are set in another timeline where Miaka, Yui and Yui all become Priestesses.
