Video games are a complex nexus of systems and possibilities. These systems include hegemonies of representation and labor structures.
Many mainstream games feature gay characters but don’t always make this clear. For example, Overwatch and Borderlands allow you to romance same-sex characters but their homosexuality is not part of the story.

When Persona 4 was first released, the game was heralded for its unafraid to present a meaningful homosexual character. This is exactly what it did. However, it was a game that also fell victim to a lot of tasteless anime tropes when it came to its characters’ queerness.
Take for example, the camping scene with Kanji and Yosuke. Yosuke asks if Kanji has problems with girls, a very dehumanizing question that implies that being gay is something to be feared and shunned.
After the scene, there are a number of jokes based on Kanji’s sexuality. This implies that being gay involves preferring women to men. Atlus may have tried to make light of the situation but it still sent a damaging message that LGBTQ people were predators and should force people from other cultures into their culture. It’s a shame, because the game’s storylines examine how toxic masculinity can harm the male protagonist and how to replace it with self-love.
Gay story games
Video games are a great way to portray LGBTQ characters and reflect the societal attitude towards diversity. Video games have diverse narratives, from Kung Jin’s Mortal Kombat character to Makoto Naya’s BlazBlue.
These games immerse players in virtual worlds and capture them with their heartfelt stories. These stories are based off real-life events and explore themes such as love, acceptance, and identity. These games have a special meaning for LGBTQ+ gamers who can relate with the stories and experiences these characters.
Some gamers, however, have expressed disappointment at the portrayal of queerness within the game. They claim that it is homonormative and “disappointing”. Others have also criticized the gameplay and the sex of some characters. Dream Daddy remains popular despite these complaints. However, it does not address issues of intersectional queerness or queer sex in any meaningful way.

Blizzard Entertainment’s first-person-shooter Overwatch features a number of characters who have rich backstories, which are revealed by the transmedia content. The company’s progressive approach to representation has been praised, but their execution has also been criticized (Shlapak 2030).
Two of Overwatch’s most popular heroes–Solider: 76 and Tracer–have recently been revealed to be queer. Both were outed through non-game content, such as a holiday comic that revealed Tracer’s girlfriend, Emily.
Authenticity was a key theme in the discussions of these revelations. This concept encompasses both the fidelity to the character’s portrayal as well as the cohesiveness of Overwatch’s fictional universe. The discussion also highlights a feeling of belonging among LGBTQ players. These players are building an alternative, safe space in Overwatch where they can belong. Fans and gamers have created spaces of engagement for years by using fan fiction.

There are many great games that fly the LGBTQ flag without falling into stereotypes or focusing too much on diversity just for the sake it. Borderlands is one of those games that oozes queerness and doesn’t try to hide it under a layer of cynicism or bigotry.
Borderlands has a wide range of queer characters. From a gay friendly demon to a fembot. Even when it comes to a playable character like claptrap, it’s clear that Gearbox wanted to show that being gay is completely normal and not something that needs to be pointed out all the time.
Todd Harper’s essay on the Mass Effect series highlights the way that gay romances have been a prevalent narrative in the game world. While his essay focuses on the mechanical reasons why Shepard is a closet narrative, it also highlights that the game has made space for romance and a happy ending for LGBT characters which is important to note in the context of a genre that was historically vilified.

Video games have evolved into a hybrid of innovative gameplay mechanics and diverse LGBTQ+ topics. Indie developers are leading the charge, providing gamers with a variety of experiences that resonate with their lived experiences. From fantasy realms to immersive storytelling, these games offer a sense of connection and empowerment.
Axton, the splicer in the popular ‘Borderlands’ franchise was originally not meant to be bisexual, but due to coding errors when reviving other characters, he would say flirtatious lines whether it was a female or male character being revived. Gearbox accepted Axton’s accidental bisexuality, and has since canonised it in several DLCs.
Other games are more explicit about the sexuality of gay characters, such as Riot’s “Caitlyn” and “Vi”, who have a romantic relationship. Or, there is ‘If Found …’,, an independent game that tells the story of a trans woman, showing both her euphoria, and difficulties, during the transition.
