The indie platformer Celeste is a wonderful example of an adventure-based game featuring an LGBTQ protagonist. Maddy Thorson is the creator design, creator and author of Celeste. As a transgender woman her queer aspects in Celeste feel natural and real. It also features several troublesome magic students that are all LGBTQ and is an excellent method of illustrating the diverse LGBTQ community within video games.

Another great example of a game that is gay-themed is the well-known RPG Fire Emblem: Awakening. This game gives players a range of gay and bisexual romance options, as well as the non-binary emcee. In contrast to other RPGs listed, the romances offered in Fire Emblem don’t just depend on gender. Rather, they also hinge on which houses the player selects to join. A male Courier, for example is able to choose the Confirmed bachelor perk, which allows him to romance male and female NPCs. A female Courier, can choose Lady Killer or Cherchez La Femme. This will allow her to romance Niles and Rhajat two bisexual characters.

One of the most significant examples of LGBTQ representation in a video game is the Life is Strange series. Max Caulfield and Steph’s love story was among the stories with sapphic themes that were aired in the debut episode of the series’ episodic format. The 2017 prequel series Before the Storm and Life is Strange True Colors further developed this gay love story, allowing Max to be portrayed as a bisexual in the canon.

Dragon Age is another series that has made a point of featuring queer characters. In the initial two games of this series, players could pursue romances with NPCs who’s gender didn’t matter. Examples include the vampire Lords Dorian and Godfrey and the knights Arcade Gannon & Veronica Santangelo. The more recent Dragon Age: Inquisition added additional LGBTQ-friendly NPCs such as the non-binary tracker Bloodhound and the sassy seer Loba.
Apex Legends, a free-to-play game that has a diverse number of characters, is another good illustration. The LGBTQ characters of Apex Legends include the lesbian Valkyrie and the queer duo Fuse & Seer. Additionally, one of the characters, Catalyst, is a transgender. This is an indication that the games on this list don’t just focus on the action, but also about telling meaningful and inclusive stories that promote equality and diversity.
